By default the People tool will display all users enrolled in your Canvas course. You can filter the users by role to obtain the count of users in that role as well as Last Activity and Total Activity.
From within a Canvas Course:
Click on People
Click on All Roles
Select the specific role. The count will be displayed to the right of the role name.
The following steps will to assist you with changing your sample student account password. Passwords may be changed throughout the year, passwords are required to be updated a year from the last reset Follow these directions after your employee password is reset, or when you need to reset the password for security purposes.
Changing the Canvas faculty student account password is the exact same process as regular login (example: jdoe) but login with this account’s login ID (example: jdoe-student ).
If you remember your current password for your sample student account, follow the steps outlined below:
This site explains the difference between the Canvas student view tool and MiraCosta College’s sample student account.
Canvas Student View
You can view a course the same way that your students view your course without logging out of your instructor account. Enabling Student View creates a ‘Test Student’ in your course. You can activate Student View in your Course Settings.
To see the student’s perspective on Canvas, use Student View to view the course, post and reply to discussions, submit assignments, view grades, view people, view pages, view the syllabus, view quizzes, view the calendar, and view the scheduler.
What Does Not Work in Canvas Student View
Attendance, conferences, conversations, collaborations, differentiated assignments, groups, LTI tools such as Pronto and Turnitin, peer reviews, and profiles do not work for the Test Student. Also, you will see only what you, as the instructor, allow your students to see.
Sample Student Account
At MiraCosta College all faculty have a separate sample student user added to their Canvas course. This is a separate account from your primary MCC faculty login account. The sample student account needs to be reset two times a year at the same time your employee password is reset.
With the sample student account all course content and tools that you have enabled for your students will work. This includes taking attendance, conferences, conversations, collaborations, differentiated assignments, groups, Pronto, LTI tools, Turnitin assignments, and peer reviews.
Reminder: You must publish your course and you must publish the course content or tool within Canvas before you can access it with your sample student account. Your sample student account has the same course permissions as your enrolled SURF students.
Sample Credentials
Add -student to the end of your MCC faculty login account. This will be your sample student account.
Example Log On: kturpin-student Password: Contact the ITS Help Desk at (760) 795-6850 for a password for first time users.
Substitute kturpin for your MCC faculty login and add -student
Students and Instructors are automatically enrolled from SURF to your Canvas course several times a day.
For the roles called out below, follow the specified directions to have the user enrolled within your course with the appropriate role.
Faculty Evaluator: Contact Heidi Willis at (760) 795-6827 or hwillis@miracosta.edu in the Office of Instruction when you need to provide access to a peer, your chair, etc. to conduct an evaluation. On the People roster, within Canvas, the user will be assigned the ‘Evaluator ‘ Canvas role. The Evaluator Canvas role has the same permissions as the student role.
The Learning Centers (TLC) ASIC, STEMLC, & Writing Center: Contact Amy Paopao at (760) 757-2121 ext. 6389 or apaopao@miracosta.edu. On the People roster, within Canvas, the user will be assigned the ‘TLC Staff ‘ Canvas role.
Community Education Student: Contact Karen Turpin at kturpin@miracosta.edu. Include the confirmation of student enrollment through community education. On the People roster, within Canvas, the user will be assigned the ‘Student Other’ Canvas role.
Substitute Instructors & TAs: Work with your dean to provide access to Canvas for the substitute instructor or TA. Approved substitute instructors and TAs are handled by your dean through the Office of Instruction’s procedures. The substitute instructor or TA will be added on SURF and uploaded to Canvas for the allowable period of time. During that time, the substitute instructor will have the ‘Teacher’Canvas role and the TA will have the ‘TA’ Canvas role.
Students that drop a course in SURF after the semester has started remain on the People roster in Canvas, but with an inactive role. Students in the inactive role do not see or have access to the Canvas course, but faculty may access activities and grades of an inactive student. This is particularly helpful when a student grade is challenged or if a faculty member is evaluating whether a dropped student is eligible to be reinstated to a course.
People
Within the People roster on Canvas, students that have dropped will have the inactive tag displayed to the right of their name. This identifier will remain next to the student’s name throughout the course unless the student is reinstated to the course. Click the student’s name to access additional information about the student and review the student’s completed activities.
You cannot hide inactive students in the People roster.
