The Grade Center in Blackboard Learn is more than just a way to record student’s grades.  It is a dynamic and interactive tool, allowing you to record data, calculate grades, monitor student progress, and provide feedback.

After this workshop, instructors will be able to:

  • Create a column and record a student’s grade
  • Hide a column from a student’s view vs. hiding columns from the instructor view
  • View a single student’s data quickly, e-mail them, and hide sample student or TAs from the grade center view.
  • Create categories and associate them with columns
  • Organize the order of the grade center columns.
  • Filter the grade center by category, status, or view
  • Create a calculated column including a weighted total column calculated by category
  • Create smart views to quickly view grades by performance, user, or category
  • Create a grading schema and assign it to a grade center column
  • Add grading color codes to visually alert when grades are at a certain level or are in progress, needs grading, or exempt.
  • Create a grade center report that can be printed and distributed to a student
  • Download the grade center data for backup and working offline
  • Create a My Grades tool link in the Course Menu

During the accreditation process this fall, visiting team members may request access to any of our classes, including online access to any class that includes distance education. Distance education classes, programs, and support services have many specific accreditation standards upon which MiraCosta will be evaluated. During this session, you’ll be able to discuss these standards and ask questions about the accreditation process. We’ll also consider the big picture: How does online education help to fulfill MiraCosta’s institutional mission? How do accreditation standards reflect good practice in online education? Bring your questions, concerns, and open mind!

In spring 2016, MiraCosta faculty, staff, students, and administrators decided to move from Blackboard and Moodle to the Canvas course management system over the next two years. In this workshop, you’ll take a tour of Canvas and see how some MiraCosta faculty have already begun to put it to use. You will receive information on how you can begin to try Canvas out and where to go to learn how to use it. You’ll also get a quick recap of how the decision was made and what the timeline for our adoption process looks like. We’ll also briefly consider the bigger picture of what’s going on with Canvas and the Online Education Initiative across the California Community College system.
