After attending a Flex workshop, record your participation on your Flex transcript under the “Record Activities” tab, selecting the “Scheduled Activities or Workshops” activity type. Canvas: Just the Basics for Beginners

This hands-on workshop is designed to give an overview of the basic tools to get started with Canvas. Learn how to create announcements, review & sort your student roster in Canvas, create your profile, message students, create assignments, and sort & record grades in the gradebook. Participants will have time for hands-on work applying what they have learned in this workshop.

In this workshop, participants will get an overview of the possibilities for creating inviting, inclusive learning environments in Canvas. Participants will get an overview of the many resources available to faculty that MiraCosta, Canvas, the CCC system, and others provide. Participants will identify Canvas tools and practices they would like to learn more about, and will determine which resources seem most useful to support their professional learning in those areas.

This workshop is designed to give you open time to work with Canvas in a collaborative, supported environment. Attendees may be in-person in a computer lab, or online from anywhere, with opportunities to interact with fellow participants and Canvas experts. This workshop is intended to be useful for anyone from beginners to advanced Canvas users, and is open entry/exit – show up anytime and stay as long as you like. Come with your Canvas questions and your fall classes-in-progress!

What Should a MiraCosta Online Teaching Certification Resource Look Like?

In spring of 2019, Jim Julius will undertake a sabbatical project to develop a Canvas-based resource that can serve as

  •  a Distance Education (DE) Handbook for all MiraCosta faculty teaching DE classes
  • and as a certification resource for MiraCosta faculty who are looking for preparation to teach online.

In this session, Jim will provide an overview of typical DE handbook and certification resource content and activities in California Community Colleges. He will outline some of his ideas and goals for the project. Most importantly, this session is intended to be full of discussion, feedback, and input from participants about what they think will be essential and useful in a MiraCosta online teaching handbook and certification resource.

This workshop will give you insight into some tools many MiraCosta faculty find useful in working with Canvas: Turnitin (to improve student citation and decrease plagiarism); Google Drive (to help manage class materials and collaborative work); and Canvas pages (to increase the creative and visual possibilities for presenting course materials in Canvas).
