It’s time to learn Canvas! What are the options?
Jim Julius
9 – 9:50 am
OC 4611
In this workshop, participants will hear about the Canvas transition: Canvas will be the sole MiraCosta course management system starting in summer 2018. Participants will receive a very brief overview of the Canvas system, including key things that MiraCosta’s early-adopter faculty have learned about it. Participants will get a tour of the many resources available to faculty that MiraCosta, Canvas, the CCC system, and others provide to help faculty learn to use Canvas effectively. Participants will have time to explore these resources on their own.

The integration also allows students to collaborate with instructors and fellow students on individual or group assignments. Bring your Google account or sign up for a free Google account online prior to this workshop.

Canva is (believe it or not) a 3rd party tool that is completely separate from Canvas. It provides an online platform for easily creating high-quality graphics that can enhance the student experience in your class. Learn tips from an experienced user on how to get started with Canva, create typical graphics, and add them to your Canvas class.
Using Turnitin in Canvas
Curry Mitchell & Billy Gunn
1:00 – 2:20 pm

Turnitin is a 3rd party tool that can enhance and streamline assessment of student written work. While many think of Turnitin primarily as a plagiarism prevention tool, Turnitin also provides tools that can make the writing drafting, feedback, and formal assessment processes both richer and more efficient. Turnitin works a bit differently in Canvas than Blackboard, so whether you’re experienced with Turnitin in Blackboard, or a beginner with Turnitin, this workshop is for you.

Online Ed Boogeymen: Should we be scared?
Jim Julius
4 – 5:20 pm
Online via ConferZoom
Many laws and regulations have specific applications to online education: accessibility, privacy (FERPA), regular effective contact/regular substantive interaction, copyright and fair use. Numerous other issues are often viewed as having significantly greater impact for faculty teaching online: cheating, hiring out class completion, financial aid fraud, and lower student success. What really is the responsibility of faculty in these areas? What can faculty do to take these issues seriously without becoming overwhelmed? How does MiraCosta support faculty with these issues? Join this workshop to become better informed about these issues and to share practices that can help address these concerns while supporting effective online pedagogy.
